Troops Say Thanks To Clifton Scouts

Troops serving in Afghanistan grateful for care packages from Troop 1104

, Patch posted an article about Boy Scout Troop 1104’s latest good deed, preparing “care packages” for Fort Meade’s soldiers in Afghanistan. Jean Skinner, a logistics coordinator at Clark Construction, and Clifton resident and Scout leader Bob Richardson coordinated this amazing project.

When Jean Skinner saw the many contributions, she described them in an email as “awesome!!!! I do believe the folks at Ft. Meade are going to be absolutely astounded when we show up with all this loot.”

Like Skinner, the Scouts and the many donors were happy to help the troops overseas. Nobody expected anything in return. Imagine my surprise on May 22 when I opened an email from Patch and read a thank you note.

Major Alex Williams wrote: “I just received one of these wonderful packages here in Afghanistan. The note inside was signed by a bunch of great folks, but the centerpiece was typed by Jean Skinner. I am trying to track him/her down to thank him/her for these efforts and put a face to a box.”

“If you have any way of passing along this message, please do. These boxes mean a lot to us, and these wonderful people putting them together need a big pat on the back and a thank you.”

Not only did Major Williams’ unit get the gift packages, but he also logged onto Patch while trying to locate Jean Skinner.

The following day, Major Williams added more information. Men and women from all branches of the military received the gifts. Because they work on sensitive projects, he couldn’t tell their location.

However, he could tell me that his favorite items were the peanut butter cookies, Top Ramen noodles and the magazine “Bowhunt America.”

Major Williams concluded with more words of gratitude:  "I want to thank Boy Scout Troop 1104, Clifton Presbyterian Church, Bob Richard and especially Jean Skinner, for putting together and sending these wonderful care packages."

“Just so you all know, they went to very appreciative soldiers, sailors and airmen from all over the USA currently serving in Afghanistan. The consensus of the group is that the peanut butter cookies were our favorite! Thank you all for your care and support.”

Thank you, Major Alex Williams, for everything you and your troops do for us every day. We are grateful.
