Moment at Debate; Thoughts of Seasonal Celebration

Listening to debate inspires reflection on family classics.

On September 29, I had the pleasure of attending a debate between the partisan candidates for chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors hosted by the Korean-American Association of Virginia.

When directly asked, the Republican candidate told the audience that the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce endorsed the incumbent chairman because they were afraid of retribution.  I was told the Chamber had a proud tradition of excluding Independent candidates.

When given an opportunity for rebuttal, the incumbent did not dispute the claim that she is petty and vindictive.

To me, family is important.  To me, our community is an extension of family. On my way home from Thursday's event, I began thinking of all the holiday celebrations and family traditions we celebrate in Autumn and Winter.

One of our traditions in celebrating for example is to watch a classic movie about how an innocent child helps new friends find the courage and character they possessed all along.  Of course, I am talking about "The Wizard of Oz" as directed by Victor Fleming based on the children's novel written by L. Frank Baum.
