Robinson's 'Coach G' Passes Away

Barry Gorodnick lost his battle with cancer over the weekend.

Beloved husband, father, and Robinson Secondary School coach Barry Gorodnick passed away Saturday after a two-year-long struggle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He leaves behind his wife, Jen Gorodnick and three children Kaitlyn, 11, Taylor, 10 and Ryan, 7. Gorodnick’s family and friends had set up a fundraising page to help pay for treatments. On Sunday, the page was updated to inform supporters of his passing. “Thanks everyone for your support throughout Barry's illness. Jen and the kids really need us now more than ever. We will continue this fundraiser to honor him and help the Gorodnicks,” read a comment from Cathy Velis, who helped start the fundraising efforts. As of Tuesday, supporters had raised $55,000 for the family. Robinson …

Brenda Z. Greene, 'Health Expert' Passes Away

Brenda Z. Greene of Fairfax died on Feb. 3.

A Fairfax woman who was a leading expert for the National School Boards Association passed away recently. Brenda Z. Greene was 70 years old when she passed away on Friday, Feb. 3. Mrs. Greene oversaw the NSBA’s health policies for nearly 25 years until her recent retirement, according to a press release issued by the association. Mrs. Greene joined the Alexandria-based NSBA in 1983. "Brenda was an extraordinary leader on behalf of school board members and children, and a tireless advocate for healthy students and healthy schools," said the organization’s Executive Director, Anne L. Bryant. "Starting more than three decades ago, she raised the issues few were willing to even discuss, such as HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, and tobacco use. Her …

Cathy Belter, Former Springfield District Representative to School Board, Died Saturday

Long time PTA leader, education advocate died at her home.

Catherine Belter, a long time Fairfax County education advocate, died at her home Saturday.  "I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend and mentor," said Ramona Morrow, president of the Fairfax County Council of PTAs.  "Cathy's efforts on behalf of all children will be remembered here in Fairfax, in Virginia and nationally for years to come." Cathy served as president of the Virginia PTA from 1985 - 87, then served 10 years on the board of the National PTA, before her election to the Fairfax County School Board.  She served two terms, 2000 to 2008, as Springfield District representative. She'd also worked part time for Fairfax County Public Library. Morrow said her association and eventual friendship with Cathy began in 1987.  "…

Gallery: Family, Friends say Goodbye to Firefighter Horace "Teddy" Pendergrass

Services were held Thursday morning at Zion Baptist Church in Fairfax

Family and friends said goodbye to fallen firefighter Horace Christopher “Teddy” Pendergrass at the Zion Baptist Church on Thursday morning. Hundreds of Fairfax County Firefighters and firefighters from as far as New York came to pay their respects. Pendergrass, 49, was a 21-year veteran of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Pendergrass passed away on Saturday at the Crosspointe Fire Station in Fairfax Station. The cause of his death is under investigation, though he is believed to have died of natural causes. Pendergrass leaves behind his two daughters, Christian Adams and Tierra Pendergrass, and his son, Horace Christopher Junior, according to his obituary published for his funeral service. Residents Remember Beloved Clifton Vet

Dr. Raymond Van Lienden, of the Animal Clinic of Clifton, passed away on May 4

Family, friends, and patrons are remembering beloved Clifton veterinarian Raymond Van Lienden. Dr. Van Lienden opened his practice just off of Main Street in 1995, according to the Animal Clinic of Clifton’s website. The site also states that he is a graduate of George Mason University and Virginia Tech. Friends left a wreath draping over the signage on the Animal Clinic’s front yard. One card from Blackacre Farms in Clifton read: “We will miss you dearly Doc. You were a great friend.” An obituary published in the Washington Post stated that Dr. Van Lienden passed away on May 4 after a brief illness. Services will be held for him in June.

Funeral Services for Paul Krause Set for This Week

Lt. Col. was killed in car accident on his way home

Services for the late retired Lt. Col. Paul Krause, 54, who died in a car accident March 14th, are set for Friday and Saturday. His family, including widow "Suki" and daughters Christina, Cheryl and Shaina, will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, in Fairfax. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at Church of the Nativity of Our Lord, 6400 Nativity Lane in Burke. Krause will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Operation Starfish, c/o Church of the Nativity of Our Lord. Elizabeth Taylor Once Called Virginia Home

Two-time Oscar winner, once married to former Sen. John Warner, lived in Middleburg and Georgetown

Actress Elizabeth Taylor, who died on Wednesday in Los Angeles from congestive heart failure at age 79, was, for a few short years, one of our Virginia neighbors. Former Virginia senator and current Belle Haven resident John Warner was married to the famed Hollywood star from 1976 to 1982. Taylor and Warner had their first date at a bicentennial dinner at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., and within six months the couple wed. The couple married at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Middleburg, on Dec. 4, 1976. In addition to Warner's 2,400-acre estate, Atoka Farm, in Loudoun County, Warner and Taylor also lived in a house in Georgetown, at 3240 S Street.
