Registration Open for Womens' Self-Defense Course

The course is being offered next week.

A free two-day self-defense class for women run by the Fairfax County Police Department begins next week. The classes is for women ages 13 and over and will cover risk awareness, crime prevention, defense, and hands-on-training on tactics. Mothers or female guardians are required to attend the class with teenaged students. The course is sponsored by the police department, the Fairfax Police Law Enforcement Foundation and C. & J. Security Corporation. Classes are on May 22 and 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, 14601 Lee Road, Chantilly. Three Injured in Lorton Fire on Furnace Road

Injuries described as non-life-threatening at fire in office park. Two taken to hospital, one taken to burn center.

Firefighters were called out to a Lorton business park at 10440 Furnace Road for a fire reported at about 11 a.m. today, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. Three reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fire, said Dan Schmidt, spokesman for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. The injuries were minor. Two were sent to the hospital and one person was sent to a burn unit. The fire was reported after an air-handling system malfunctioned in the building, fire officials said. “The sprinklers in the building activated and we responded to make sure the fire was out,” Schmidt said. Bicyclist Struck by Car Sunday

The incident happened at the intersection of Ox Road and South Run Oaks Drive. Cyclist's injuries were said to be life-threatening, but no update available.

A 61-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car at the intersection of Ox Road and South Run Oaks Drive on Sunday, according to authorities. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the accident was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday when a 2006 Hyundai Tucson SUV was driving northbound down Ox Road. The bicycle was also traveling in northbound in the bike path. As the two approached Southern Oaks Drive, the driver of the car attempted to make a right turn at the same time the cyclist entered that intersection, police said.   “The bicyclist didn’t stop and the driver didn’t see him,” said Don Gotthardt, spokesman for the police department. Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Cocaine Ring More than two dozen people from Northern Virginia were arrested in connection with a Honduran cocaine ring. According to case documents, those charged — largely Honduran immigrants who have lived in Northern Virginia for the past seven years — hired couriers to smuggle cocaine to the United States, usually through wooden shoes or picture frames. Drunken Driving Charge Dropped for FAA's Babbitt

Judge says Fairfax officer had no reason to pull Babbitt over

A judge dismissed charges against the former Federal Aviation Administration chief Thursday, according to The Washington Post. The Post reports: Fairfax City General District Court Judge Ian O’Flaherty dropped the case after watching video of the Fairfax City traffic stop. In it, Randy Babbitt makes a left hand turn off of southbound Lee Highway. "In the process, Babbitt crossed double yellow lines and a northbound lane, but he did not drive on the wrong side of the road as Fairfax City Officer Mike Morris alleged in the criminal complaint." The judge also considered a breathalyzer reading of .oo7, just under the state's legal limit. He did not consider later breathalyzer results that put Babbitt over the legal limit. I used to work for the FAA but left before Randy Babbit became Administrator. People I know and whose opinion I value say he was an excellent Administrator. I live in the City of Fairfax, near where this incident occurred and I was particularly saddend when he was arrested and yet another public servant had to leave his office due to personal foibles. Fire Officials Focus on Youth Awareness

This week is Arson Awareness Week nationwide.

Fairfax county firefighters are putting the focus on preventing children from starting fires as part of the national Arson Awareness Week taking place this now. The Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program, which under the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department works to prevent children from being involved with fires. They work with police, school, and mental health officials to prevent youth firesetting. According to the fire department, younger children are more likely to set fires in homes, while older children are more likely to set fires outside. Bites Lead Animal Control Reports in April

Animal control responded to multiple calls for dog bites in addition to an attack on therapeutic riding program horses in Herndon.

Every week, the Fairfax County Police department releases a list of Animal Control incidents at the end of its weekly incident report. Patch is compiling these responses at the end of each month. Animal Wounding Between April 25 and 26, three horses were wounded near Frying Pan Farm Park in the 2600 block of Centreville Road. The horses were cut by a sharp object on their hind quarters, leaving about eight-inch gashes. Police say the horses were hurt between 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25 and 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 26. The Fairfax County Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding out who harmed the horses.
