The winner on Friday goes to the state tournament.
The South County Stallions defeated the Chantilly Chargers 74-57 at home on Tuesday in the second round of the Northern Region Tournament. Tight defense led the South County team to victory, and the Stallions face Woodson for the regional championship game at 6 p.m. Friday at Robinson Secondary School. South County (7-15 in the regular season) won four out of the last five playoff games. "We had a lot of close-call games in January, and I think the team learned from them," said South County coach Wendell Johnson. "And we've learned the defense we need to have in order to win at this level." South County senior forward Justin Hampton led the Stallions with 22 points. "If we lose we're done, and none of us want to turn our stuff in tomorrow…
The Virginia High School League this week is reconsidering its decision to drop crew from its list of sanctioned high school sports.
The Virginia High School League is reconsidering its December decision to drop crew from its list of sanctioned school activities—a move that could slow the growth of crew at many high schools, McLean parents say. Membership in the VHSL comes with a number of benefits for most sports, including catastrophic insurance coverage, transportation funding, other supportive funding and more. VHSL is a private, non-profit organization based in Charlottesville that sets high school sports and activity regulations. One reason VHSL reportedly has given for their decision is that crew is not a sport in at least half of Virginia schools, according to a letter to crew parents posted on South County High School’s crew page. However, Virginia Scholastic …

Senate Committee Kills ‘Tebow Bill’ on Thursday night, but some Patch readers think proposal should be voted into law.
Virginia's Senate Education and Health Committee shot down a bill Thursday that would have allowed home-schooled students to participate in public schools’ sports teams. Committee members killed House Bill 1442 — also known as the “Tebow bill" — on a 7-8 vote, shelving it for the remainder of this legislative session. But should the bill have reached the full Senate floor? In a Patch blog post, Fairfax County School Board member Ryan McElveen highlighted the defeat of the bill as one of the three most important actions residents could advocate for this session as Richmond pressed on with what he called an "educational extremism." The school board voted to advocate against the proposal, McElveen wrote, "because, in short, the bill would …

The Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks are in.
The Washington Redskins fell to the Seattle Seahawks 24-14 Sunday in a disappointing loss for a team on the rise. Despite the loss, the team clearly has a solid foundation for the future. After dominating the first quarter and storming to a 14-0 lead, Robert Griffin III hurt and already injured and braced knee. He continued, a move criticized by some, but did not finish the game. Seattle nearly evened the score by halftime at 14-13. Neither team could muster a score in the third quarter, but the Seahawks pushed through with another 11 points in the fourth quarter, while shutting down the Redskins for the win. Earlier in the day, the Baltimore Ravens knocked No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts out of the playoffs at …
The Washington Redskins face the Seattle Seahawks this weekend in one of four NFL wildcard games.
The Washington Redskins have spent since 2007 traveling the road back to the NFL playoffs -- but it's been a heck of a ride. Next stop: Sunday's wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. All this hailing to the Redskins should seem familiar. In 2007, the Redskins also made the 2007 NFL playoffs as a wildcard team. And, just like this year, that 2007 playoff game was against the Seattle Seahawks. Let's hope the similarities end there, because the Seahawks won the last time around. That game, though was in Seattle. Sunday, the Redskins are at home for the first time in the NFL playoffs since they beat the Detroit Lions in 1999. Find more Redskins playoff history here. Can Robert Griffin III -- RG3 -- pull off another run against the …

It is about tolerance! It is about multi-culturalism! It is about diversity! It is about accepting those different than you! You cannot discard those students who are being home schooled like they are second class citizens. When their parents pay for it, they are entitled to it however they see fit! They can choose to use it all. They can choose to use not of it. They can pick and choose whatever…   more ›
