Chopra spoke with Patch Thursday afternoon after a campaign appearance at the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.
Aneesh Chopra, one of two Democrats running for Virginia's Lt. Gov. seat, wants to reverse controversial legislation backed by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli - the Republican gubernatorial nominee for Governor. "We would turn back on the ultrasound bill, on the TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) regulations, the voter ID Bills," said Chopra in an interview with Patch Thursday. "I would actively work with the Governor and Attorney General to institute the executive order on anti discrimination at the workplace based on a whole range of issues, including your sexual orientation," he said. Chopra spoke with Patch for about 20 minutes after making a campaign appearance at the Grenspring …

The swearing-in ceremony for the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, Monday in Washington, DC.
History was made Monday in Washington, D.C. for the swearing-in ceremonies for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, for their second terms of office, and supporters traveled near and far to witness the occasion. Patch was at the scene, from sunrise until sunset, at the National Mall. Unofficial crowd estimates said that one million people were on hand for the event. It was a long day for the Obama family, starting out at 8:30 a.m. with a church service across the street from the White House at St. John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square. From there, the first family, the president, first lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Malia and Sasha returned to the White House. After a coffee with members of Congress, the group …
No rest for the weary: Democrats gear up for tough 2013 state races.
An estimated 1,100 people attended the Virginia Inaugural Ball on Sunday at the Westin Arlington Gateway to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama — and gear up for key statewide elections in 2013. "Everybody is happy. Everybody is excited. It's a feel-good moment for everyone who worked on a campaign," Arlington County Democratic Chairman Mike Lieberman told Patch before speaking to the crowd. "The president is right to feel good about this weekend. You can't help but be optimistic. There's a lot of criticism of our government out there, and some of it is deserved. But there's also a lot of reason for optimism. And coming out of the last election, we see a lot of opportunities." [See photos from the Virginia Inaugural…

Ahead of President Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration Jan. 21, we rounded up historic photos showing presidential oaths of office past.
President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremony and celebration Jan. 21, is a far cry from the inauguration of our first president, George Washington. That ceremony was held April 30, 1789 at Federal Hall in New York City, where the federal government was headquartered at the time. Later inaugurations were held in Philadelphia when the federal government moved there. It was there at Washington's second inauguration that he made the shortest inauguration speech on record—133 words and less than two minutes long. One thing all presidential inauguration swearing-in ceremonies have in common, though, are these words: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States and will, to the …

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stopped in Fairfax for a last-minute rally at the Patriot Center.
Mitt Romney neared the end of his presidential campaign with a spirited rally in Fairfax Monday afternoon — part of a final push to gather precious Northern Virginia votes on the eve of a hotly contested election. Thousands lined up outside the Patriot Center at George Mason University to show their support for the Republican presidential hopeful, who pitched a message central to his campaign: that the economy is broken and he is the one who can fix it. While both campaigns have showered enormous amounts of money and resources to persuade undecided Virginia voters over the past few months, Monday's rally was in large part a bid to retain enthusiasm among local supporters and ensure their appearance at the polls Tuesday. "Now let's make …

Former GOP presidential nominee spoke at American Legion Post 177.
U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) campaigned for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney today at the American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax. McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, compared his former opponent, President Barack Obama, to President Jimmy Carter, a one-term Democrat who occupied the White House from 1977-1981. "We need a new commander in chief," McCain said. "What happens in Northern Virginia is going to determine, probably, the outcome of this race." McCain spent the day campaigning for Romney and after his Fairfax stop, stumped for Romney at the American Legion Post in Woodbridge. The majority of McCain's comments were about national decurity issues including the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi…

Romney congratulated Obama for successfully killing Osama bin Laden, but ultimately questioned his policies on the Middle East, charging that the unrest in Egypt and Libya had created a “rising tide of chaos.” He said America needed an expansive plan to handle the situation. “We can’t kill our way out of this mess,” Romney said. “We’re going to have to put in place a very …
