The death of a beloved high school coach and the theft of a large coin collection from an elderly couple topped the news this week.

Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Robinson’s ‘Coach G’ Remembered Robinson Secondary School softball and football coach Barry Gorodnick was remembered in a memorial service at the school this week. Gorodnick died last weekend after battling cancer. Crime: Rare Coins Stolen Police are asking for help in locating someone who may have stolen antique coins and bills worth up to $500,000 from an elderly couple. After attending an antique coin show in Charlottesville on Saturday, April 14, the couple returned home to the Annandale area only to have their entire collection stolen right out of the car in their own driveway, police said Tuesday. Robinson Coach Battles Cancer; Community Rallies Support

Robinson Secondary School coach Barry Gorodnick was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2010.

Robinson Secondary School coach Barry Gorodnick and his wife, Jen, were both working as high school softball coaches when they met in January of 1996. The two would fall in love, get married, and have three children to fill their Centreville home. It was the classic American dream; but in 2010, the unexpected came down on them. Three days before Christmas, Barry woke up with stomach pain powerful enough to send him to the emergency room. “He was symptom-free until he was diagnosed,” Jen Gorodnick said. “They did a CAT scan and it showed the cancer.” Gorodnick, 47, began treatment immediately for stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
