Shawn Camp, a Fairfax product, is a reliever for the Chicago Cubs who led the Major Leagues in appearances as this week began and recently pitched in his 500th big league game.
The Washington Nationals, who have already clinched their first-ever winning season, have been reaching milestones on a regular basis. And so has Shawn Camp, a former baseball standout at Robinson High and George Mason University. Camp made the 500th appearance of his Major League career on Friday, Aug. 30 against the Giants, and he was given the scorecard from the game as a souvenir. “I have to get it framed. It was a great day and we won,” said Camp, a 16th round pick of the San Diego Padres in 1997 out of George Mason. Camp, 36, is in the area this week as a right-handed reliever for the Chicago Cubs, who are playing a four-game series with the first-place Nationals (83-52) through Thursday night. “All of my good buddies are Nats’ fans…

Saunders is slated to take the mound Wednesday, three days after being traded to Baltimore by Arizona.
West Springfield High School graduate Joe Saunders will debut with the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night, as they continue their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Saunders was traded on Sunday by the Diamondbacks, in return for reliever Matt Lindstrom. The Orioles are making a run for the playoffs, something they have not reached since 1997, and the team wanted a veteran pitcher who can help them get there. “We’ve liked Joe Saunders for quite awhile,” said Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette. “He’s pitched in the American League. He’s pitched in the playoffs. He’s pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona. And we just like his experience," he said. "I also like the fact that he’s left-handed," added Duquette. "I think that …

Westfield High grad Justin Bour was a Southern League All-Star this season in the
Chicago Cubs' farm system with Tennessee, and is among the leaders in RBIs in all of minor league baseball.
When Justin Bour played at Westfield High, Billy Swoope, a long-time baseball scout for the Chicago Cubs, noticed. Swoope follows top amateur players in the mid-Atlantic region, and he decided then to keep track of Bour. Later Bour played at Division I George Mason University in Fairfax, and Swoope continued to follow the slugger. "The thing I liked about him was he was very agile for a big guy," said Swoope. "He was a very good contact hitter for a power guy." “Justin is one of the few kids … who could really hit the ball to the opposite field as well as anyone we have had here,” said Billy Brown, the veteran head coach at Mason. “His approach was fantastic. The one thing that Justin shows is a really marketable commodity: power. The ball…

A.J. Johnson is one of the top starters for the Patriots while former high school teammate Brandon Kuter gives the team depth out of the bullpen in weekend games against conference opponents.
Updated April 24, 2012 Patriot's pitcher A. J. Johnson improved to 6-4 as Mason beat ODU, 16-6, in Fairfax on Sunday. He went six innings and allowed five earned runs. “A.J. has been fabulous for us,” Mason coach Bill Brown said. “He makes quality pitches. He works fast and throws a ton of strikes.” Brown also commented on fellow pitcher, junior right-hander Brandon Kuter. “We were looking to find a role for him,” Brown said of Kuter. “He is a guy who will be critical for us if we want to play in June,” he said, speaking of the possibility of winning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title. Mason is 13-8 and second in the CAA. ________ A.J. Johnson began his college career in the nation’s capital at George Washington University (GW…

Mike Perez lifts South County with two-run walk-off single
South County baseball is no stranger to high-scoring affairs. The Stallions have scored 10 or more runs in 16 of their 27 games played this season. So when the Stallions found themselves trailing 9-4 Tuesday evening in the fourth inning of the state quarterfinals, head coach Mark Luther remained calm, knowing that his team was still in the game. “One thing nice about it is, we’ve been down 9-4 earlier in the year against other people, so we know we have the ability to come back,” said Luther. “We are going to put the ball in play against a lot of people. We had our nerves early, but we kept our composure and kept on playing.” Playing in front of their home crowd, where the atmosphere rivaled that of a state championship game, the …

Beal tapped by the Kansas City Royals organization in Major League Baseball draft this afternoon
South County Secondary School Stallions baseball pitcher Evan Beal was tapped by the Kansas City Royals organization in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft this afternoon. Beal, a Fairfax Station resident, was a key player on this year’s Stallions team, which is undefeated this season and is now in contention for the state title. (See this Patch story “South County’s Baseball Success was Years in the Making” for more on the team and Beal’s role on it.) Beal, who has already accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of South Carolina, was drafted no. 246. Patch will have more on Beal after tonight’s South County baseball game. The Stallions are playing Nansemond River High School (Suffolk, Va.) Warriors in the first round of the …
