Healthy Strides Community Race Returning to Burke Lake Park

The second annual community race will be Saturday, April 27.

The Fairfax County Park Authority and runners from Fairfax Station and the Northern Virginia area gearing up for the second annual Healthy Strides Community 5K and 10K races in Burke Lake Park on Saturday, April 27. According to information on the Park Authority's Healthy Strides website, the 10K course will run through Burke Lake Park, which is located in Fairfax Station along Ox Road, on paved and unpaved trails around the lake and through the park. Burke Lake Park's centerpiece is a 218-acre lake with 5.25 miles of fishing shoreline.  The Burke Lake Park Marina includes boat rentals, a new fishing pier and a boat launching dock. Both the fishing bulkheads and the fishing pier are accessible to persons with disabilities. A 4.68 trail surrounds the lake, starting at the marina parking lot.

Rocknoceros to Perform at Burke Lake Park

The concert is Saturday.

Children’s entertainers Rocknoceros will perform Saturday at the Burke Lake Park amphitheater. The three-man band formed in the summer of 2005 and has released two CDs, both of which won Children's Recording of the Year from the Washington Area Music Association, according to a press release about the event. The concert is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the amphitheater at Burke Lake Park located at 7315 Ox Road. The concert is free.

Burke Lake Dam Project to Impact Park Users

Construction on the dam is set to begin in September and last several months.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), the state agency responsible for maintaining Lake Burke, will begin required work on the dam in September in order to meet new state standards. Work is expected to last several months. The Fairfax County Park Authority reports VDGIF is currently notifying neighbors regarding the impacts and effects of the rehabilitation project. "The Park Authority is working closely with VDGIF to assess its impact on park activities and to ensure that wherever possible, public access continues," said Judy Pederson, Park Authority (FCPA) Public Information officer, in a press release. Runners Participate in 'Healthy Strides' Walk

The walk took place over the weekend.

Runners came out to Burke Lake Park over the weekend for the first ever Healthy Strides Community 10K, 5K and Fun Run. The event is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Take 12 Steps for Health Program. View a video of the run produced by the county.

Fire Department Contains Tank Leak at Burke Lake Park

The incident was reported Tuesday afternoon.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was called to Burke Lake Park Tuesday afternoon to contain a propane tank leak. The 1,000-gallon tank was reportedly leaking just before 1 p.m. Crews were able to contain the leak within the half hour, according to fire department spokeswoman Renee Stilwell. The usage for the tank was unclear.
