Virginia Speaker of the House William J. Howell (R-Stafford) broke with his own party Wednesday, using a procedural ruling to stop a Republican-sponsored redistricting plan. The plan might have had a chance of passing the Virginia House if it made it to the floor for a vote, but Howell quashed the bill, clearing the way for the House to concentrate on Gov. Bob McDonnell's transportation plan, The Washington Post reported. “I am committed to upholding the honor and traditions of both the office of Speaker, the institution as a whole and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Howell said in a statement. Surprise legislation proposed and passed Monday by Virginia's Senate — which would redraw some of state senate district lines in favor of Republicans — make it "a sad day for the Commonwealth," said State Sen. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has agreed to pay for a traffic light at the Braddock Road entrance to Willow Springs Elementary School, according to officials who attended a community meeting at the school. In addition, FCPS has agreed to pay for a right hand turn lane from the school onto Braddock Road to improve traffic flow. Parents and staff of Willow Springs were surprised when just week's before school started, the school safety signals at the school's entrance on Braddock Road were removed. It is unclear who ordered them removed. At A Glance Life-long Northern Virginia resident Senator Dave Marsden (D) is running for reelection to represent the 37th District. The district represents portions of Fairfax Station, Burke, Annandale, and Centreville. Marsden, 63, was born in Alexandria and grew up in Annandale. “I lived in a small farm house adjacent to what is now Fairfax Hospital,” Marsden, who know lives in Burke, said. “My dad bought it in 1952. The farmhouse was the original Woodburn Elementary School.” Marsden attended W.T. Woodson High School and went to get a degree in social work. Republican candidates for the 37th State Senate seat faced off at a debate Monday evening at the Braddock Hall in the Kings Park Library. Nominees Steve Hunt and Jason Flanary fielded a bevy of questions at the hour-and-a half long debate with standing room only. Braddock District Supervisor John Cook moderated the event. “For Republicans, we are just a couple of seats away from a majority in the State Senate, so it is critical that we have strong candidates this year,” Cook said.
