Mike Perez lifts South County with two-run walk-off single
South County baseball is no stranger to high-scoring affairs. The Stallions have scored 10 or more runs in 16 of their 27 games played this season. So when the Stallions found themselves trailing 9-4 Tuesday evening in the fourth inning of the state quarterfinals, head coach Mark Luther remained calm, knowing that his team was still in the game. “One thing nice about it is, we’ve been down 9-4 earlier in the year against other people, so we know we have the ability to come back,” said Luther. “We are going to put the ball in play against a lot of people. Beal tapped by the Kansas City Royals organization in Major League Baseball draft this afternoon
South County Secondary School Stallions baseball pitcher Evan Beal was tapped by the Kansas City Royals organization in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft this afternoon. Beal, a Fairfax Station resident, was a key player on this year’s Stallions team, which is undefeated this season and is now in contention for the state title. They begin the postseason tomorrow in West Springfield
They may have been small. They may have been still learning the game. They may have been awkward. But the seeds for South County’s attention-grabbing, perfect-so-far baseball season (20-0 and winners of the Patriot District regular season) were planted back in 2000, when this year’s group of seniors were just seven and eight- year-old Little Leaguers. One Springfield team had South County’s third baseman Luke Bondurant and star pitcher Evan Beal.
