On the football field, Levi Teschler doesn’t hear the crowd cheering and doesn’t care. It would mess with his concentration. Unable to wear part of his cochlear implant during games, the 15-year-old Fairfax teen reads lips, follows hand signals and keeps his eyes open. Last month, Levi was chosen from thousands to join the 25-member Under-15 U.S. National Team. The team, comprised of athletes age 15 and younger, is selected by a committee made up of former NFL scouts, coaches and high school experts. Here is the explanation: The term "Hearing Impaired" is a technically accurate term much preferred by hearing people, largely because they view it as politically correct.
