Did You Know: The Third American to Fly an Airplane Did it in Fairfax Station

There was Orville and Wilbur Wright, and then Dr. William Christmas.

We all know about Kitty Hawk N.C., and those famous first flights by the Wright brothers in 1903. But did you know that the third American to fly did it in Fairfax Station? It was in March 1908, and Dr. William Christmas flew his "aeroplane" in secret before crashing into a tree and burning the wreckage to keep anyone from copying his designs. Christmas, a physician who worked in the District, spent the winter of 1907-08 building his bi-plane at the Fairfax Station home of engineer Robert Ions. Christmas' vessel, like the Wright Brothers' model, had twin propellers that were run by an engine behind the pilot. The whole thing weighed 850 pounds and was made of steel and wood, with fabric stretched along the wings.  The 160-acre Ions …

Fairfax Station Parents Speak Out Against School Boundary Line Shifts

In particular, Fairfax Station parents said they feel 'targeted' and say the shift would be 'a nightmare' for them.

A large number of parents from the Fairfax Station "island" community turned out Wednesday night for the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Board of Education public hearing on a proposed school boundary line shift - and most of them were not happy. Many parents from the Fairfax Station community, who face being pulled out of the "Frost-Woodson pyramid" - meaning, their elementary school would no longer feed into Frost Middle School and then Woodson High School, and would instead go to Robinson Secondary School - said they felt "unfairly targeted" and that they were being treated as "statistically insignificant" because of their community's small size. Parents cited many reasons for being unhappy with the proposed change. The reasons …

Dusting of Snow Likely in Fairfax Station by Friday Morning

A very small amount of snow may accumulate Thursday night and Friday morning across Fairfax Station.

Weather forecasters are predicting snow will start falling after midnight with accumulations up to an inch possible across Fairfax Station, according to the National Weather Service—a huge change from Wednesday, when the high temperature at Dulles International Airport was 72 degrees. Thursday night’s low temperature will be around 31 degrees, and high temperatures Friday will not be higher than 35 degrees. Because this snow is driven by a “clipper” system, it is very unlikely our area will get more than a dusting. Still, the Virginia Department of Transportation plans to treat highways and state roads in the region tonight.  In the event school is delayed tomorrow morning while crews treat roads, that information will be posted on Patch …

NFL Playoffs: Where to Watch, TV Schedule, Lines

The Washington Redskins face the Seattle Seahawks this weekend in one of four NFL wildcard games.

The Washington Redskins have spent since 2007 traveling the road back to the NFL playoffs -- but it's been a heck of a ride. Next stop: Sunday's wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. All this hailing to the Redskins should seem familiar. In 2007, the Redskins also made the 2007 NFL playoffs as a wildcard team. And, just like this year, that 2007 playoff game was against the Seattle Seahawks. Let's hope the similarities end there, because the Seahawks won the last time around. That game, though was in Seattle. Sunday, the Redskins are at home for the first time in the NFL playoffs since they beat the Detroit Lions in 1999. Find more Redskins playoff history here. Can Robert Griffin III -- RG3 -- pull off another run against the …

Restaurant Inspections

Restaurant Inspections: China Express and Subway

The most recently available restaurant inspection reports from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4 in the Burke and Fairfax Station areas.

Between Sept. 26 and Oct.4, restaurants in the Burke and Fairfax Station areas were inspected. For prior restaurant inspection reports, click here. In Virginia, restaurant inspection reports aren't quite as simple as getting a letter grade or an easy to see number rating to post in the front window. That said, we all want to know how our favorite restaurants stack up on cleanliness and sanitation. Inspectors grade restaurants based on critical and non-critical violations. A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served." Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not …
