Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. Thanksgiving Travel: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times

If you're traveling Wednesday through Sunday for the Thanksgiving holiday, grab some coffee and leave very early in the morning when traffic is lightest.

About 43.6 million people are planning to travel 50 miles or more for their Thanksgiving meal this year, according to AAA—and 90 percent of those people are traveling by car. While Northern Virginia is traffic-heavy throughout the holiday period, the day before Thanksgiving is the heaviest travel day. To help you plan your travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation created this set of maps showing Thanksgiving traffic congestion from Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011. Unlike last year, the Beltway Express Lanes will be open for Thanksgiving, which may alleviate some of the Thanksgiving travel congestion on Wednesday. Gas prices are on the decline in Fairfax Station, Clifton and the surrounding area, from $3.77 in October to as low as $3.36 this week, according to AAA. If you’re looking for less expensive gas as you hit the road for Thanksgiving, there are several mobile apps and websites that may help. Gas Prices: Labor Day Weekend and Nearby College Towns

Hurricane Isaac could increase gas prices in Virginia. If you're traveling Labor Day Weekend or driving to college, here's what AAA says about gas prices.

Hurricane Isaac, which may hit the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday, has already shut down several refineries, could send gas prices up right before Labor Day weekend. But for now, it looks like Americans are still making plans to travel. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20-cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3.
