'Prayer at Valley Forge' Ends Four Year Display at Mt. Vernon

The iconic work of art will be on display through Sept. 3.

The iconic Arnold Friberg painting “Prayer at Valley Forge” will leave the Mount Vernon Estate after Labor Day weekend.  Considered by many to be the artist's most famous work, the painting has been on display at the estate since 2008. Friberg spent two years creating the lifelike painting depicting General Washington praying in the snow while the Continental Army winters at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania during 1777 and 1778. His extensive research included personally experiencing winter at Valley Forge. He created the painting in 1975, in time to commemorate the United States’ bicentennial celebration.
