Rep. Connolly: Mitt Romney's Comments Make Him 'Unfit for Office'

Democratic Congressman made the statement Tuesday to residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.

Northern Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's recently released comments in a controversial videotape make him "unfit for office." Connolly spoke to about 75 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield during a campaign appearance. Romney's comments, secretly taped without his knowledge, featured a controversial statement in which he said that 47 percent of the electorate do not pay income taxes and are dependent on the government and consequently support President Obama's candidacy. George Allen Campaigns at Greenspring Retirement Community

Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine are even in the polls.

Virginia Republican Senate candidate George Allen spoke to 150 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community on Tuesday. Allen, who is running neck-and-neck against Democratic challenger Tim Kaine, defended Medicare, chastised Democrats for the weak economy, and, if elected, pledged to seek transportation funding for the Commonwealth.  Greenspring, home to nearly 2,000 senior residents, has the highest turnout of all voting precincts in Fairfax County.  Allen focused on healthcare, job creation and opening up Virginia's energy resources.   “It’s our responsibility to seniors to provide the Medicare and Social Security benefits they have paid into their entire working lives. Greenspring Honors Scholarship Candidates

The group of honored students includes a student from South County. Hayfield students also honored.

Nineteen scholarship candidates for 2012 were recognized for their commitment and service to the Greenspring community at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 23.  All will receive $6,000 ($750 per semester) if their final semester grades meet the criteria of a C average. The scholarships will be paid directly to their colleges per semester. Greenspring has awarded scholarships since 1999 to local high school students who have worked in various dining service capacities at the retirement community. The scholarships are presented to reward exemplary students who have shown a commitment to serving the Greenspring community and its residents.
