Senate Committee Kills ‘Tebow Bill’ on Thursday night, but some Patch readers think proposal should be voted into law.
Virginia's Senate Education and Health Committee shot down a bill Thursday that would have allowed home-schooled students to participate in public schools’ sports teams. Committee members killed House Bill 1442 — also known as the “Tebow bill" — on a 7-8 vote, shelving it for the remainder of this legislative session. But should the bill have reached the full Senate floor? In a Patch blog post, Fairfax County School Board member Ryan McElveen highlighted the defeat of the bill as one of the three most important actions residents could advocate for this session as Richmond pressed on with what he called an "educational extremism." The cross country meet between Annandale High School, Lee High School, T.C. Williams High School and South County Secondary School is the winner of this week's Patch's "Game of the Week" poll for the Patriot District. The meet earned 75 percent of the vote in this week's poll, beating out a field hockey game between W.T. Woodson and West Potomac, a Golf District Tournament between Lee, South County Secondary School, T.C. Williams, W.T. Woodson, West Potomac, West Springfield, Annandale and Lake Braddock, and a cross country meet between Lake Braddock, W.T. Woodson, West Potomac and West Springfield. The Wolverines' record is now 3-0 after beating the South County Stallions 49-39.
After spending most of the game neck and neck Friday night, the West Potomac Wolverines beat the South County Stallions 49-39 in Lorton. Before the game started, Gerry Pannoni — head coach for South County — said he was concerned about West Potomac's quarterback, Caleb Williams (#17), their running back Demornay Pierson-El (#5) and their kicker Chris Blewitt (#16). "The key is running back Demornay Pierson-El," said Pannoni. "In their first two games, he made a bunch of big plays," he said. "Pierson-El, the quarterback and the kicker can control the game just by field position." In turn, Wolverines Head Coach Jeremiah Davis had his concerns about South County. Thursday showdown selected from Patriot District matchups to be featured on Patch.
Lee and Annandale High School fans bolstered their field hockey teams this week, helping the Thursday faceoff win Patch's "Game of the Week" poll for the Patriot District. The matchup earned 71 percent — about 10 votes — in this week's poll, beating out a golf match between T.C. Wiliams and West Springfield and two field hockey games between South County and W.T. Woodson and West Potomac and Lake Braddock, respectively. The game will be featured on Patch later this week. Wednesday's win was the Ram's fifth consecutive.
The Robinson boys tennis team overcame both the Herndon Hornets and cold, rainy game-time conditions to record their fifth consecutive win Wednesday, keeping them atop the Concorde District. Jacob Schreiman finished off the #4 singles, 10 - 0. At #5, senior David Weinberg was close behind winning 10 - 2. Amit Gupta won his #2 singles using his attacking style. Brian Bui won easily at #4. Austin Mathews, subbing in at #6, had a slow start but began to play more confidently as the match developed. He won 10 - 6. In the most interesting match, Ram's sophomore Aaron Christian and senior Josh Albertson slugged it out, with Christian taking the win.
