We caught up with Catherine Spain (AKA Ms. Liberty) outside Liberty Tax Service in Fairfax Station.

Tax season officially begins on Jan. 30. Are you ready?  Patch recently caught up with Catherine Spain, 18, of Fairfax, who stood for hours at a corner of the Fairfax Station Square Shopping Center along Ox Road with a sign for Liberty Tax Service.  "I'll be here until April," said Spain, who said she seldom gets cold while working her four-hour shifts. "You just layer and you're fine. It's a job like any other job. You just stand around and listen to music and get paid for it."   And how long will it take for you to get a return after you file your taxes? Volunteers Needed to Help Prepare Tax Returns

The Fairfax County Department of Family Services needs volunteers from January to mid-April 2013.

Fairfax County is seeking volunteers to help prepare tax returns for low-income families. The Volunteers Income Tax Assistance in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Family Services needs volunteers from January to mid-April 2013 to: prepare taxes, greet and screen customers, serve as translators, and provide IT support at library sites or act as a site coordinator. According to their website, each volunteer is needed for three to six hours a week. All volunteers will be trained in how to use TaxWise and Tax Law software. The training is free. Volunteers will be certified as a tax preparer by the IRS upon successful completion of their training. Those interested in becoming a volunteer can register online.  For more …

File Your Taxes Yet? You Have Until Tuesday

Some local post offices will extend their hours on Tuesday, but not by much.

Need more time to file your 2011 tax returns? You have until Tuesday, April 17, since April 15 fell on Sunday (and since D.C. is observing Emancipation Day on Monday). A few post offices in the Northern Virginia area will extend business hours for the federal tax filing deadline Tuesday. If you're still not prepared to file your taxes, you can file an extension that will buy you time until Oct. 15.
