Poll: Should Obama Propose Extending Tax Cuts to All?

President Obama wants to extend tax cuts only to those making less than $250,000.

As President Barack Obama prepares to visit Fairfax County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, on Saturday, members of Congress are debating whether to heed his call to extend a Bush-era tax cut to families making less than $250,000. Republicans want to see that cut applied to all, including families making more than $250,000. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who represents Virginia's 7th Congressional District, said he would schedule a vote later this month to extend the cuts to all, including the wealthy. Obama has said he would veto anything that includes tax cuts for all. Former Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat and friend of the president, disagrees with Obama on the cut-off point. When you say "poor" do you mean the 47% of the population Romney dismissed? I love this new party line where ONLY the rich create jobs. That IS rich! Perhaps you never heard of a guy named George Romney. Living on welfare and food stamps at one point, he made some money and is now rich and employs people. You speak of opprutunity, but it seems you mean only for the rich. While the rest of us …   more ›

McDonnell: Out of the Running for Romney's VP Choice?

Virginia governor tells radio audience on WTOP Tuesday "I am not being vetted by his campaign."

On radio station WTOP Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) all but ruled out the possibility of becoming the vice presidential choice of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney. "I am not being vetted by his campaign," he told the radio audience.  That doesn't completely shut the door if the Romney campaign came calling. McDonnell has not said he would say "no" to the VP slot if it were offered. The popular Republican governor, who received 59 percent of the vote before he was sworn in as the 71st head of the Commonwealth in 2010, said he plans to serve out his term, which ends in January 2014. McDonnell became chairman of the Republican Governors Association in 2011 and has campaigned for Romney in Virginia, as well as in Southern primary…

Being a Virginian by birth and family - 8 generations worth, I feel we are Southern enough. It is the outlanders who have come here either looking for work or military service may feel the need to be part of where they live, but I don't think so. Seems to me they wish us to be the same as them - strangers.   more ›

Poll: Should Millionaires Pay Higher Taxes?

President Obama's budget, unveiled while he was in Annandale on Monday, calls for higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

President Barack Obama’s 2013 budget, unveiled Monday while he was speaking at Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale campus, calls for increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans. In Annandale on Monday, Obama said, "We can settle for a country where a few people do really, really well and everybody else struggles to get by or we can restore an economy where everybody gets a fair shot, everybody does their fair share, everybody plays by the same set of rules." Specifically, Obama proposes a much higher tax rate on dividend income of the wealthiest taxpayers and a Buffett Rule to increase taxes on millionaires. Some pundits have said that in an election year with a divided Congress, almost any budget proposal is dead on arrival. …

When do you suppose the administration will realize that $250K a year does not a millionaire make? Tax the rich, if you think your election chances can stand it, but also be aware of who the "rich" are. Better yet, quit wasting money, and quit budgeting more than you're taking in. Seems there are valid compromises to be made here, but doing so would not provide fodder for election advertising.   more ›
