Update: Robinson Grads Aid George Mason Baseball

A.J. Johnson is one of the top starters for the Patriots while former high school teammate Brandon Kuter gives the team depth out of the bullpen in weekend games against conference opponents.

Updated April 24, 2012 Patriot's pitcher A. J. Johnson improved to 6-4 as Mason beat ODU, 16-6, in Fairfax on Sunday. He went six innings and allowed five earned runs. “A.J. has been fabulous for us,” Mason coach Bill Brown said. “He makes quality pitches. He works fast and throws a ton of strikes.” Brown also commented on fellow pitcher, junior right-hander Brandon Kuter. “We were looking to find a role for him,” Brown said of Kuter. “He is a guy who will be critical for us if we want to play in June,” he said, speaking of the possibility of winning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title. Mason is 13-8 and second in the CAA. ________ A.J. Johnson began his college career in the nation’s capital at George Washington University (GW…

Eagle Scouts Help Repair Fairfax Station Railroad Museum Sign

The aging sign was repaired by Boy Scouts last month.

This announcement was submitted by Fairfax Station Railroad Museum Chair Michael Chinworth. A group of Boy Scouts led by Eagle Scout hopeful Edmund Sparrow replaced an aging sign for the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum on the corner of Ox Road and Fairfax Station Road.  Edmund, a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School, volunteered to undertake the project last month in fulfillment of his Eagle Scout requirement to carry out a community service project that would leave a lasting value. Edmund is a member of Troop 50, sponsored by the men's club of Holy Spirit Parish in Annandale. His childhood memories of visiting Fairfax Station and its train shows motivated him to volunteer for replacing the previous sign. “I've worn and outgrown at …

'Challenge Index' Measures Quantity, Not Quality

The perspective of the Challenge Index from an IB student

Each year, Jay Matthews of the Washington Post takes it upon himself to value and rate quantity rather than quality. This great endeavor is the Challenge Index. Schools are ranked by dividing the number of AP/IB tests given by the number of seniors.  This produces a ratio that falsely indicates the quality of the school. Jay Matthews writes of the glory of schools, particularly lower income schools, who push students to take AP classes. The method of ranking is flawed, and much debated, but the real problem is in its wake.  Fairfax County launched a recent initiative to have every student graduate with one AP/IB credit. Hm.  That sounds like a ploy to get a higher ranking, considering the index is determined by dividing the number of tests…

Rams softball fail to sweep district champs

Now 3-4 in Concorde district

Robinson softball began Tuesday's game against Westfield seeded third in the Concorde district, with hopes of beating the Bulldogs for the second time this season and sweeping the series. Their dreams were quickly put to bed after two innings, as Westfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead that the Rams could not recover from. The action unexpectedly came to halt in the bottom of the second inning after Westfield senior Frankie Martinez hit a ground ball into center-field between the legs of pitcher Lauren Stapleton. Realizing that she had time to run out a double, Martinez rounded first base and sprinted towards second. As the ball was thrown by Briana Banks, Martinez made a last minute decision to slide feet first, and what happened next was …

Robinson Basketball Star Mike Rice Hits 1,000 Points

Rams player among top five scorers in the Washington area

Since the age of two, Robinson’s Mike Rice has had a basketball in his hands; he’s had the opportunity to master his shot all the way from the Fisher-Price stage to Spalding. In Wednesday’s 90-68 road loss against Herndon, Rice’s work helped him achieve a new milestone – reaching 1,000 career points in his high school career. “It’s been lot of hard work put in the past three years,” Rice said.  “[I’ve put in] a lot of hard work in the offseason getting my body stronger, working on my jump shot; just improving my game." After scoring 35 points in a junior varsity game his sophomore season, Rice was immediately brought up to the varsity level and has been a dominant player for Robinson ever since. “He plays to the best of his ability with …
