UPDATE: Fairfax County Under Tornado Watch Until 2 AM

Fairfax County is also under a Flash Flood Watch. Evening storm could bring gusty winds up to 40 MPH and possible thunder and lightning.

UPDATE, Wednesday 6:40 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Fairfax County from 6:30 p.m. until Thursday at 2 a.m. The county is also under a wind advisory until Thursday at 6 a.m. ---- The week's wacky winter weather — freezing rain Monday that closed or delayed some schools in Northern Virginia and highs Tuesday that reached nearly 70 degrees — continues Wednesday. Fairfax County is under a Flash Flood Watch (from 3 p.m. Wednesday until late in the evening), according to the National Weather Service.  What forecasters are calling "a strong cold front" is heading toward Northern Virginia, and the area could see 1-2 inches of rain — possibly with thunderstorms — with heavy rain starting to fall Wednesday around…

UPDATE: Power Restored to Many, 2,000 Still Without Power Sunday

Dominion Power restores power to more than 100,000 in 24 hours after strong storm hits Saturday.

Update Sunday 5:30 p.m.: Things are starting to get back to normal for those who lost power over the weekend, just in time for getting back to work and school on Monday. Dominion Power has restored power to more than 100,000 homes in 24 hours time in Northern Virginia. As of about 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dominion Power reported 2,114 still without power in Northern Virginia. Here is an update of outages in the area: The National Weather Service reported Sunday morning that a preliminary investigation by the service shows no tornado touched down in Northern Virginia on Saturday. Update: Hundreds of Thousands without Power, Air Conditioning

Powerful 'derecho' slams metro area. Dominion Power says it could be 'multiple days' before power restored to all. Temperatures in some areas reached 100 degrees at 3 p.m.

Update 10 p.m. The number of homes in Northern Virginia without power Saturday night is still immense after Friday night's "derecho" storm, but the number is shrinking. As of 10 p.m., there were 345,630 Dominion Power customers without power in Northern Virginia. Burke Centre Library will be open Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. for residents seeking relief from the heat. Regional libraries with power will also be open. Please call ahead if possible. Library locations and contact information. Due to ongoing power outages, all indoor activities at Fairfax County Public Schools are canceled for Sunday.
