Get ready for a bumpy start to the week. Monday is expected to be cloudy with a chance of rain and the area could see some thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. But after Monday, Northern Virginia will see a string of beautiful fall weather, the National Weather Service predicts. Monday will start out cloudy with a 50 to 60 percent chance of thundershowers starting possibly around mid-morning, with highs around 75 degrees, according to the weather service. Forecast: La Niña Weather Pattern Causing Warmer Fall Temperatures

Northern Virginia's extreme weather started last winter, meteorologists say.

Derechos, blizzards, hurricanes, thunderstorms, extreme heat...is there any wacky weather Northern Virginia hasn't seen in recent years? This past summer saw enough 100-plus degree days to make 2012 the most intense in 141 years of record-keeping according to the Capital Weather Gang. “Starting from this past winter, we had temperatures that were much above normal,” said Ken Widelski of the National Weather Service. “It was an abnormally warm winter, followed by a cooler than normal spring and we definitely had our periods of hot weather over the summer.” As for this June's derecho, it’s typical climatologically for this area to see a derecho every couple of years, Widelski explained. Forecast: Tuesday Storm Could Bring 55 MPH Winds

A Fairfax County alert warns area could see strong storm Tuesday between 4-8 p.m.

Forecasters predict Northern Virginia could see a strong storm hit the area Tuesday late afternoon through the evening, between 4 and 8 p.m., according to an alert sent out Monday by Fairfax County's Community Emergency Alert Network. The alert notes that a cold front moving into the area between 4 and 8 p.m. could bring "damaging wind gusts in excess of 55 mph, locally heavy rainfall and an isolated tornado." The alert also noted flooding is possible. The National Weather Service reports "heavy downpours will cause a threat for localized flooding." Once the storm moves out of the area late Tuesday night, the area will see cooler temperatures on Wednesday, with highs in the low 70s forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.

This Week's Weather: Highs Around 90, Possible Thunderstorm Tuesday Night

Weather forecasters say to enjoy the lower humidity Monday, after some scattered storms blew the mugginess out of the area over the weekend. Expect temperatures this week to hit the high 80s to low 90s for highs, forecasters predict. The drier air disappears a bit with more humidity and possible thunderstorms hitting the area on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service gives the metro area a 50 percent chance of seeing thunderstorms Tuesday night. Forecast Calls for Possible Thunderstorms Sunday Afternoon

NWS predicts storms could hit area after 3 p.m.

While Fairfax Station and Clifton will get some relief from the heat Sunday as temperatures drop back into the 90s, afternoon thunderstorms could bring strong storms, wind and hail to the area after 3 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts Sunday will begin partly sunny with a high near 96 and a heat index value as high as 104. Around 3 p.m., the beginning of a cold front pushing southward across the Mid-Atlantic will bring showers and thunderstorms, with a possibility of damaging wind and hail, NWS said. Some areas will see only a tenth of an inch of rainfall; in areas with thunderstorms, however, that amount will be greater. Powerful 'derecho' slams metro area. Dominion Power says it could be 'multiple days' before power restored to all. Temperatures in some areas reached 100 degrees at 3 p.m.

Update 10 p.m. The number of homes in Northern Virginia without power Saturday night is still immense after Friday night's "derecho" storm, but the number is shrinking. As of 10 p.m., there were 345,630 Dominion Power customers without power in Northern Virginia.
