Best of Braddock Awards and Picnic

Supervisor John Cook and the Braddock District Council invite residents to the July 11 event.

Braddock District Supervisor Cook and the Braddock District Council of Community Organizations will honor the 2011-2012 Best of Braddock Award winners at the annual awards picnic on Wednesday, July 11. The event is at the Braddock District office, located in the same building as the Kings Park Library. The picnic begins at 6 p.m., and the awards ceremony follows at 7 p.m. This year's Best of Braddock Award winners are: The staff of Braddock District Supervisor John Cook provided this information to Patch.

Residents Propose Off-Leash Dog Park in Burke

A public hearing is scheduled for Monday on the first off-leash dog park in the Braddock District area of Fairfax County.

Burke-area dog lovers have been working for more than two years to bring an off-leash dog park to the Braddock District, and a public hearing next week could bring the idea closer to reality. “An off-leash dog area allows dogs to socialize and run without being intrusive and be a problem,” said Russ Rosen, who is a member of Braddock Dogs, a group formed to promote creating an off-leash, fenced-in dog park. “It gives them an opportunity to get some exercise and be around other dogs and let people who like dogs to meet in another area.” The Fairfax County Park Authority is hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Kings Park Library to discuss the idea and take input on a draft of the Monticello Park master plan. John Cook Wins Second Term as Braddock Supervisor in Tight Race

Cook, who faced strong competition from challenger Janet Oleszek, narrowly won on Tuesday evening

Updated 3 p.m. Wednesday Republican incumbent John Cook was re-elected to his second term as Braddock District Supervisor on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday evening in what was largely considered one of the most contended races in the county. "There are independent voices in the Braddock District, and our voices are going to be heard on the Board of Supervisors,” said Cook in his victory speech at the Fairfax County Republication Committee party at the Fairview Marriott in Falls Church. Fairfax Station and Clifton Voters Head to the Polls Today

Fairfax Station voters are heading out to the polls this morning at a steady pace to participate in state senate, county, and school board elections. Fairview Elementary School saw about 600 voters turning out to the polls as of 11 a.m., while Antioch Baptist Church on Little Ox Road and Silverbrook Elementary saw about 300. “I am hopeful for a large turnout,” said Phil Scruggs, chief election officer at the Fairview Elementary polling place.  “We will be lucky to hit about 30 percent voter turnout, but we are one of the highest in the county so far.” Cameran Quinn, in charge of elections, told Patch Tuesday morning that he county, as of Nov. 1, had 640,689 "active" voter registrations. Schools and colleges, transportation woes and complaints of unfair treatment out of Richmond took center stage Wednesday evening at a forum for state lawmakers and their political challengers at the Robinson Legislative Forum.
