Parents Push for Full-Day Kindergarten
Fairfax County says switching 37 schools from half-day to full-day would cost $8 million
A group of Fairfax County parents, teachers and community members urged county school officials to install full-day kindergarten in the 37 schools, out of a total of 138, with only half-day kindergarten last night at a meeting at the City of Fairfax Regional Library. “[Half-day kindergarten students] are held to exactly the same standards as full-day students,” said Ravensworth Elementary School kindergarten teacher Lea Ruiz-Ramon. “We’re just asking that our students get the 517 additional hours of instructional time that they need.” Ruiz-Ramon added that half-day kindergarten teachers must impart the same curriculum in half the time and to twice as many students as full-day kindergarten teachers, as they teach more than one class. “Today…
