Virginia AG says health care act is attack on Catholic Church.
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli said this week he believes that going to jail may be the best way that Virginians can challenge President Obama's healthcare mandate for businesses to cover contraception in their health insurance plans. "Forcing business owners and businesses to do this is not consistent with our history of preserving religious liberty," said Cuccinelli Wednesday, in an interview with conservative radio talk show host Steve Deace. The national debt, sequestration and immigration were some of the of issues debated Friday by incumbent Rep. Frank Wolf and his opponent for the 10th congressional district Democrat Kristin Cabral, an attorney from McLean. The two squared off during a forum hosted in Manassas by the Prince William Committee of 100 and mediated by Dr. Stephen J. Farnsworth, a University of Mary Washington professor and author. During the forum, Wolf, who has held his position as congressman for the 10th District since 1981, spoke often of his support for the Simpson-Bowles Commission’s findings concerning the national debt. High Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold what some call 'Obamacare.'
Area leaders were quick to react today to the news that the Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health reform law. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R): "Today's Supreme Court ruling is extremely disappointing for Virginia and for America. The wait for the Supreme Court decision on the Affordable Care Act — what some call "Obamacare" — is over. On Thursday, the last day of the 2011-2012 Supreme Court session, Chief Justice John Roberts said the individual mandate may be upheld as a tax under a narrow reading of the Constitution. The decision was 5-4 with Roberts siding with the more liberal members of the court. "The individual mandate cannot be upheld as an exercise of Congress's power under the Commerce Clause," Roberts wrote. "That Clause authorizes Congress to regulate interstate commerce, not to order individuals to engage in it. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down their decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Health Care Act (or "Obamacare," as some call it), upholding the law. There are about 30 million people in the United States without health insurance. In Virginia, there are 1,039,300 uninsured, according to figures from statehealthfacts.org. Hundreds protest both sides Tuesday outside the Supreme Court.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday to protest for and against President Obama’s health care reform. The high court is hearing arguments for the second of the three-day hearing. The case, according to the Washington Post, largely rests on the constitutionality of a provision that originated deep in Republican circles. "As Americans we all deserve affordable health care," said Allan Jordan, of Piscataway, N.J., outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday. "Health care is too high, and not everyone has the funds to pay for it. That's not right."
